Cameron University Choral Composition Competition

Cameron University is pleased to announce its first Choral Composition Competition to recognize and support a new work for concert choir to be performed by the Cameron Concert Choir ensemble.

Composers are invited to submit one composition to be considered for the final concert of the 2018-2019 season (concert dates will be announced before Jan 2019).

The contest is soliciting compositions for unpublished choir works under 10 minutes in length. The texts may be sacred or secular in English. An additional instrument is acceptable. You must have proof of permission to use any text not in the public domain.

The winning applicant will receive a $250 award and the composition will be performed at the final choral concert of the 2018-2019 season. The winning composer is encouraged to attend a rehearsal of the composition. Winning composers are required to attend the premiere of the composition. There is no stipend for travel but some housing arrangements may be available.

Competition Application Process

This competition is open to composers regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, creed, age, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, or veteran status. Current faculty, staff, and students of Cameron University are ineligible to enter the competition.

Composition guidelines:
Each composer may submit one original work (no arrangements)
The work should be for SATB choir with piano (optional solo instrument permitted)
Generally, no more than 4 parts but may include limited divisi
Up to 10 minutes in length (5-8 minutes preferable)
The work must not have been performed in any public setting or previously published. This is to be a premier performance.
If the intended lyrics are not in the public domain, and the composer is not the author and copyright holder of the lyrics, it is the responsibility of the composer to obtain permission from the copyright holder before the application deadline.
Include the date of the composition on the score.
Include the performance time on the score.

All scores will be in PDF format
Recordings of the submissions are encouraged but not required. MIDI renderings are acceptable. Please submit MP3 files only.

Scores and all materials should be submitted electronically to ghoepfner@cameron.edu before October 15, 2018.

Composers retain copyright of music submitted. By submitting a composition in this competition, you (the composer) agree that your composition maybe photocopied for the purposes of adjudication and rehearsal by the Cameron Concert Choir. Also, you (the composer) grants the Cameron Concert Choir the right to audio and video record the live performance and/or a studio performance of the composition, to distribute the recording for marketing/PR purposes, and to feature the recording on our YouTube page, website, and social media account.

Pieces will be adjudicated by the Cameron voice faculty including the choir director.
The winner will be announced by February 1st, 2019.
