MidCities Chamber Singers Choral Composition Competition

The MidCities Chamber Singers, located and performing in the Dallas/Fort Worth Texas area, has entered its 3rd performing season under the direction of Conductor D.J. Bulls and Associate Conductor Dr. G. Mikael Lindström.

To further the cause of promoting new choral music, we are excited to announce our 1st annual choral composition competition. We value new music and frequently perform new works by our Composer in Residence, Dr. Christopher Teichler. Now we would like to take our love for new music further by introducing our members and our community to more contemporary composers.

Eligibility:

Open to non-professional composers born in 1979 or later. No nationality or citizenship requirements.

Guidelines:

All submitted works must be for SATB chorus, either unaccompanied or with piano. If unaccompanied, a piano reduction of vocal parts is suggested to be included in the score. No other instrumentation will be accepted nor will we accept performance audio that is to be played during performance.

Submitted works may include non-vocal instructions for the choir such as clapping, speaking, stomping, snapping, etc. No extra props.

Sacred or secular texts are permitted but must be considered by the judging panel to be appropriate for a public audience or the text may be edited or the submission disqualified. Vocalise (non-textual sounds such as “ooh” or “ah”) is allowed.

Our target choir size is 24 singers. Please consider this when submitting and you are encouraged (but not required) to avoid dividing parts beyond SSAATTBB.

Pieces should be between 3 and 8 minutes in length when performed.

Awards:

1st Place: $300 cash prize, working session with the choir rehearsing your piece, and recorded public performance at our final 2018-2019 concert in the Spring of 2019

2nd Place: $150 cash prize, working session with the choir rehearsing your piece, and recorded public performance at our final 2018-2019 concert in the Spring of 2019

The judges reserve the right not to award prizes should no submission be of suitable quality and also reserve the right to award Honorable Mentions. Honorable Mentions may be selected for public performance.

Winning pieces and Honorable Mentions will receive public recognition at our concert and on our website.

Winning composers are encouraged but not required to attend the public performance. Travel and lodging will not be provided.
