Composing in the Wilderness 2019 - EXTENDED DEADLINE

Composing in the Wilderness has extended its application deadline to October 15th.

We have also added new information about our Denali Adventure and Kayaking Adventure, and we're happy that both trips have lower costs than last year.

Come with us and explore the inspiring wilderness of Alaska's backcountry, compose music about it, and have it premiered by top performers.

If you are a COMPOSER, love WILDERNESS, and want to take advantage of this one-of-a-kind CREATIVE ADVENTURE, then Composing in the Wilderness is for you! In 2019 we will once again be offering two immersive back-country trips, paired with performances of your newly composed pieces by top performers. We're opening up the application window much earlier to give as many people as possible the opportunity to apply. Take a look at our website to see what our previous years have been like, and then use our simple application form to apply.

Composing in the Wilderness has a strong history of embracing diversity, and we encourage applications from composers of all ages, nationalities, and styles.

Some answers to frequently-asked questions:

- This is not a class. This is a shared wilderness adventure for composers. We have an immersive and inspiring time together in the wilderness of Alaska, and then everyone writes music that captures some aspect of the experience.
Thus, our participants (from all over the world) regularly include professionals, university faculty members, graduate students, and undergraduates.

- The performers are all top-flight contemporary players (mostly from New York City) who are on faculty at the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival. Together, they form the festival’s contemporary music ensemble “Corvus”.

- Although scholarships are not available through the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival, MANY of our participants receive grant funding from universities, arts granting organizations, or government agencies. We can help with this by providing letters of support and press releases.

- DENALI ADVENTURE participants draw their instrumentation out of a hat on the first day (mostly trios and quartets) and compose their pieces in three days. It’s INTENSE! Performances take place in Denali National Park and Fairbanks.

- KAYAKING ADVENTURE participants write for the full quintet and have a couple months to write their pieces. The premiere performance takes place in New York City.
