Spark Composition Competition

Rhode Island’s professional chamber choir, Collegium Ancora, is proud to announce its inaugural Spark Composition Contest for this Spring 2019. The winning composition will be awarded a cash prize of $500 and be premiered by Collegium Ancora during the final concert of the season, to be held on June 15 at Grace Church in Providence. To submit a new choral composition for consideration, visit ($35 per piece submitted).

Dedicated to enriching Rhode Island through the choral arts, Collegium Ancora performs choral music from ancient times and modern, sacred and secular. Now entering its third season, Collegium Ancora is among the newest of New England's professional ensembles, currently in residence at Grace Church in Providence. This 24-voice chamber choir, founded in 2016 to diversify the musical offerings available in the region, aims to be a professional chamber choir for the Ocean State. The ensemble’s stylistic range is attested by recent collaborations, which range from singing backup for Gullah band Ranky Tanky to closing the 50th Newport Music Festival with a program of Vivaldi and Pergolesi.

Hailed as “arguably the best singing group in southern New England”, Collegium Ancora is now seeking newly composed choral scores for the final concert of their 2018-19 season, coinciding with and co-sponsored by Rhode Island Pride. This performance will feature music by, about, and for LGBTQIA* communities. This theme is being used as a catalyst to spark and inspire new choral works that feature texts that may be directly relevant to LGBTQIA* experiences, but may also deal with broader intersecting themes, such as the general theme of pride, celebrating diversity & inclusion, empowering marginalized voices, and more.
