2nd Annual Davidson Wind Ensemble Composition Contest
Davidson Symphonic Band is pleased to present the second annual Composition Contest for wind ensemble. Davidson Symphonic Band consistently receives superior ratings at state assessments, and performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall and Florida Bandmasters Association Conference. Some repertoire from our last couple of years:
Blue Shades – Frank Ticheli
First Suite in Eb – Gustav Holst
Hounds of Spring – Alfred Reed
Award: The winner of this competition will have their piece premiered (and recorded) by the Davidson Symphonic Band at our spring concert in May in Mobile, AL. All pieces will be read by the band at a January-March rehearsal. A winner will be chosen by a committee (with 10% of the vote from the wind ensemble members) and up to two honorable mentions will be awarded (and may be performed at later concerts).
Submission Criteria:
1. Medium- Wind Ensemble standard instrumentation- follow this link and look at concert band level (grade 3-3 1/2) for compositional guidelines: https://www.northernbeachesbrass.com/band-grade-guide/ Piece must not have already been premiered.
2. Duration- 2-5 minutes, grade 3 work, no arrangements.
3. Limit- two entries per composer ($20 per entry)
4. Entry Fee- A non-refundable entry fee of $20 is due with submission. paypal.me/DavidsonComposition
5. Anonymous Submission: The composer’s name must not appear on the score or parts. Submit a pdf of the work and parts (MIDI realization is also encouraged) to davidsoncompositioncontest@gmail.com, and paypal receipt for submission.
