Sing Out Strong: Immigrant Voices

White Snake Projects Call for Composers:
SING OUT STRONG: Immigrant Voices

White Snake Projects seeks composers for SING OUT STRONG: Immigrant Voices, a community-based project that sets Boston immigrant stories to music, as part of the public programming for the new opera, I Am A Dreamer Who No Longer Dreams, premiering in Boston in September 2019.

For SING OUT STRONG: Immigrant Voices, White Snake Projects will collect stories from Boston immigrant communities and will commission composers to set these stories to music of any genre, to be presented in free public concerts in August and September 2019, as well as on the Robert J. Orchard Stage of the Paramount Theater as the prologue to I Am A Dreamer Who No Longer Dreams.

White Snake Projects seeks composers who are new or first generation immigrants, and/or who identify strongly with the immigrant experience. Selected composers will be matched with a story and compose music for voice and piano. If necessary, stories will be adapted to make them singable. Each song created should be 1-5 minutes long. Composers receive a stipend of $100 per song and a professionally mixed and remastered recording of the live performance.

I Am A Dreamer Who No Longer Dreams is a new opera exploring immigration, dislocation, and transformation in America, composed by Jorge Sosa with libretto by Cerise Lim Jacobs, directed by Elena Araoz, and conducted by Maria Sensi Sellner. The world premier will be September 2019 at the Robert J. Orchard Stage, Paramount Theater, Boston.

To apply:
Please submit letter of interest, resume, and two recorded samples of original compositions to Studio-quality recordings are not required.

Deadline: March 30th, 2019. Selected composers will be notified by April 15th, 2019.

White Snake Projects brings diverse, timely and relevant opera, based on original stories by Cerise Jacobs, to Boston’s main stage. Like the legendary White Snake demon who becomes human to live intensely, White Snake Projects transforms our present day experiences into passionate new opera made in America. We believe there is no better way to bridge the chasms of race, national origin and gender then through a reimagined art form combining cutting edge technology, music, theater, and dance. We kicked off our ambitious strategy with Ouroboros Trilogy, a trio of grand operas, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning Madame White Snake, in September 2016 and continued with REV. 23 (2017), PermaDeath (2018), and I Am A Dreamer Who No Longer Dreams (2019).
