Call for Composers: Opera Elect

Opera Elect, a new music and opera production company based in Boise, Idaho, is seeking proposals of vocal works to premiere on their 2nd Annual New Music Concert Summer Series; June 28th, July 26th, and August 23rd of 2019. This series has grown from last year's New Music Series which included 21 works and several premieres.

Works need not have been written specifically for this call, but must not have been previously performed. Composers are not required to attend the performance. There are no restrictions on composer eligibility.

Composers are asked to submit up to three pieces (scores required, recordings optional but encouraged if possible) to demonstrate their compositional style and vocal writing, a proposal of no more than one page describing the proposed (or existing) work, as well as a resume and our application form so that we can learn a little more about you.

Each concert will be approximately one hour in length, so approximately 3 hours of music, total, will be accepted. We’re willing to consider anything from short art songs to a longer works using our full forces, but programming constraints will play a role in our decision making.

Each composer can propose up to 20 minutes of music.

Anticipated available performance forces:
3 Sopranos (2 lyric coloratura/1 full lyric)
1 Mezzo-Soprano (lyric coloratura)
1 Alto (lyric)
1 Tenor (leggero)
1 Baritone (lyric)
*Our musicians' skill level ranges from highly skilled undergraduates to graduate/professionals.
*We’re willing to consider pieces/proposals that include one additional instrument, but please understand that our ability to perform such pieces is dependent on finding an additional performer. Electronics are discouraged but not strictly prohibited (you may change that, depending on your feelings about that).

We’ll be finalizing our roster of singers during the first week of March and if for whatever reason we lose a particular voice type in the process of our auditions, we will reach out and suggest modifications. If you feel the loss of that particular voice type is detrimental to your piece and you choose to withdraw, we will refund your fee.

The application submission deadline is March 1st. Early submissions are appreciated. Composers will have at least one month between the date of notification (by March 15th) and the score submission deadline (April 15th).

Proposals will be reviewed by Opera Elect Founder and Artistic Director Jordan Bowman and Managing Director Edith Dull.

Composers will be provided with a quality live recording of the concert.

We charge a fee, $15, to defray the cost of thoroughly reviewing submissions. Concert revenue is split among all of the performers and composers. Based on last season, selected composers would be likely to make that back.
