Composition Competition - String Ensemble, String & Piano Duo ($9000 AUD prize money)

In conjunction with the Composition Conference from 9 - 11 October 2019, the New England Conservatorium of Music (NECOM) in Armidale, Australia is hosting two major string composition prizes, with ,strong>$9000 AUD,/strong> in prize money. NECOM is calling for submissions from amateur composers (ie you don't derive your primary income from composing). There is no age limit. The aim of our competition is to promote NECOM as a Conservatorium of Excellence in composition and string teaching.

The competition has two categories, and all string parts should be playable by advanced school-aged students (eg around Grade 7 AMEB / Trinity College).


Original three-movement work for any three or more of the following string instruments: violin, viola, cello, double bass. Movements should not be longer than five minutes. 1st Prize = $5000 AUD. 2nd Prize = $1000.

Original three-movement work in the style of a duo sonata or set of miniatures, scored for solo string instrument (violin, viola, cello or double bass) with piano. Movements should not be longer than 5 minutes. 1st Prize = $2500. 2nd Prize = $500. The piano part may be written to a standard suitable for a professional-level performer if you wish.

Entry fee of $25 AUD per composition.

Entries close Friday 30th August at midnight Australian Eastern Standard Time.
Winners announced at the NECOM Composition COnference (COMPCON) on Friday morning, 11th October 2019 live through our Facebook page.
