A Hymn for Mercy 2019

We are pleased to announce details of our 3rd A Hymn for Mercy Composition Competition.

Composers are invited to submit a new setting of the hymn Holy Spirit, Ever Dwelling. The full text of the hymn is given below.

The hymn can be for unison, SA, SSA, SAB, or SATB choir, and must include parts for congregation. The accompaniment may be piano and/or organ. Composers, if they wish, may also include parts for a C instrument. Composers can be of any age or nationality.

The hymn may be strophic, setting the text exactly as written, or responsorial (using material from the given text or elsewhere).

There will be a single prize of €350 awarded for the best entry, and the winning piece will be performed by the Schola in St Mary's Church, Navan during May 2020.

1 Holy Spirit, ever dwelling
In the holiest realms of light;
Holy Spirit, ever brooding
O'er a world of gloom and night,
Holy Spirit, ever raising
Those on earth to thrones on high;
Living, life-imparting Spirit,
You we praise and magnify.

2 Holy Spirit, ever living
As the Church's very life,
Holy Spirit, ever striving
Through us in a ceaseless strife,
Holy Spirit, ever forming
In the Church the mind of Christ;
You we praise with endless worship
For Your gracious gifts unpriced.

3 Holy Spirit, ever working
Through the Church's ministry,
Teaching, strength'ning, and absolving,
Setting captive sinners free,
Holy Spirit, ever binding
Age to age and soul to soul,
In communion never ending,
You we worship and extol.
