Hendrix College Candlelight Carol Competition

Composers are invited to offer submissions for this year's Candlelight Carol Competition at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas (USA). The winning composition will be premiered at Hendrix's annual Christmas lessons & carols services, December 5-8, 2019. Its composer will receive $1,000.00 prize, up to $300.00 in travel reimbursements to attend a service in Arkansas, and a live recording of the piece. Guidelines are available at http://bit.ly/CandlelightCompetition2019.

Compositions must meet the following guidelines:
1. Works must be composed for SATB mixed choir or SSA/SSAA (treble voices only). The choir performing the work will be approximately 30-40 collegiate singers.
2. Works must be a cappella or feature organ accompaniment. No other instrumentation will be permitted.
3. Works must be unperformed and unrecorded - the Hendrix College Choir will offer the premiere performance.
4. Works must use William Blake's "A Cradle Song" (from Songs of Innocence) as its text. Composers are free to some or all of the text, excerpting freely if they so choose. The complete text is included in the contest guidelines.
5. Works must be complete at the time of submission, requiring no substantive editorial changes.
6. Works must be submitted as a PDF document, without the composer's name included in the document pages or the file name itself.
7. An mp3 of a MIDI file may be submitted as well (optional). Judges may use this in their evaluation if they so choose.

Submission Guidelines
Composers must submit the following materials as attachments to a single email message by September 1, 2019, sent to carolcompetition@hendrix.edu:
Complete score, submitted as a single .PDF document. Paper submissions will not be accepted.
The composer’s name must not be included on any pages of the composition or in the file name(s).
The composer’s name must be included only in the text of the email itself, along with email and phone contact information.
MIDI files of the work (optional, and given the same file name as the score .PDF); judges may use the MIDI files at their discretion in evaluating the works.
One page of program notes (optional). N.B.: the printed program of the Candlelight Carol Service cannot accommodate a large body of program notes. Therefore, the composer must accept that their remarks will be excerpted and edited by Dr. Morgan for use in the service program.

Send any questions to Dr. Andrew Morgan (morgana@hendrix.edu).
