2019/2010 University of Toledo Opera Workshop Composition Competition

Prospectus:
The University of Toledo Department of Music Opera Workshop has committed to the production of one act operas by living composers as a part of the New Music Festival held at the school every spring. The Workshop is soliciting operas from working composers for consideration for performance. The selected piece will receive a performance at the 2020 Festival, and the honored composer will receive a $500 prize.

Composition Details:
1. The work will be a one act opera written within the past 20 years.
2. The work may have already been performed at another venue.
3. The work must not exceed one hour (60 minutes) in performance length.
4. The performance level of the work should be suitable for advanced undergraduate and early graduate level singers.
5. The work may be written for up to six voices, not to exceed 4 female and 2 male roles; there may be a small chorus or ensemble.
6. The accompaniment for the work must be either: piano solo, string quartet, woodwind quintet, or a chamber ensemble not to exceed 11 performers (available instruments: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, harp, piano, percussion (1), violin (2), viola, violoncello, bass)

Libretto:
1. Libretto must be in English.
2. The composer must provide written proof from the Librettist of permission to utilize the text or provide proof that the text is in public domain.

Entry Details:
1. The composer must submit 1 piano vocal score and 1 complete score if the accompaniment is other than piano solo. Only hard copies will be considered (no electronic submissions).
2. Recording of the work, either live or computer generated (.mp3/.wav), may accompany the submission, but are not required.
3. Composer must submit proof of permission to set the libretto or its status in public domain with the entry.
4. A statement containing the composer’s contact information (address, phone, and email), name of the work, and short program notes should accompany the mailed submission.
5. A $25 entry fee, check or money order, made payable to the University of Toledo Opera Workshop, must accompany the submission in order for it to be considered.
6. Scores must be mailed no later than November 15, 2019 to the following address:

7. Electronic recordings of the work may be emailed to wayne.anthony@utoledo.edu Please ensure the email clearly states the name of the composer, the name of the work, and the format of the recording.
8. If composers wish the return of scores after the adjudication, a self-addressed mailer with sufficient postage for the return mailing must accompany the submission.
9. Submission of entries assumes both the composer and the librettist endow the University of Toledo Department of Music with the right to perform the work with no further royalty assessment; this includes the right to any podcasts, radio, or television broadcasts which may result from the performance.

Adjudication, Announcement of Winner, and Performance:
1. One opera will be selected for performance by a panel consisting of the Head of Opera Workshop, the Head of the Voice Department, and a Member of the Composition Faculty at the University.
2. The composer of the selected opera will be awarded $500 in prize remuneration.
3. The selected opera will be announced no later than December 15, 2019 by email to the entrants.
4. Entries not chosen will be returned via self-enclosed mailers by no later than Jan. 20, 2020.
5. The selected opera will be performed on the 2020 New Music Festival which is normally held in early April, exact date to be announced.
6. The composer will be invited to attend the performance, and providing there is sufficient funding, will be given a travel grant to assist with expenses; however, this is not guaranteed.
7. The composer will be provided with both an audio and video recording of the performance.
8. The University of Toledo reserves the right to choose no winner for the competition if a suitable piece for the Department resources is not found.
