2020 Alba Music Festival Composition Program

The 2020 Alba Music Festival Composition Program takes place in the small town of Alba, nestled in the foothills of the Italian Alps of Italy’s Piedmont during the annual Alba International Music Festival from May 23 to June 1, 2020. The fifth edition of the composition program features Composer-in-Residence Derek Bermel (http://www.derekbermel.com/), and Ensemble-in-Residence The Borromeo String Quartet (http://www.borromeoquartet.org/). The 2020 resident composition faculty includes Mary Ellen Childs (http://www.maryellenchilds.com/), J Anthony Allen https://janthonyallen.com/), and special guest, guitarist and composer Barry Finnerty (https://www.barryfinnerty.com/) who performed and recorded with Miles Davis, the Brecker Brothers, the Crusaders, and Blood Sweat and Tears among others.

The composition program features daily workshops and masterclasses hosted by the Composer-in-Residence and resident faculty covering a wide range of topics, ranging from issues of compositional craft to career development. Participants will also receive one-on-one private lessons with the Composer-in-Residence, the resident faculty, and distinguished guests. New for 2020 is an optional add-on electronic and acoustic music production day camp run by faculty member J Anthony Allen, in partnership with Slam Academy (https://slamacademy.com/).

Participants of the composition program will be invited to compose a new work of up to five (5) minutes for the Borromeo String Quartet (or a subset of the group). Each work will be premiered on an afternoon festival concert, and subsequently recorded as part of a dedicated, professional recording session at the end of the week.

There is no fee to apply, and the program is open to composers of any age, nationality, and at any stage of their career.

Tuition for the 2020 composition program is €2395, which is inclusive of the performance, recording, private lessons, masterclasses and workshops. The fee also includes reserved seating at festival concerts, a wine tasting event at a local area winery with a sommelier, and travel to runout concerts with the resident ensemble. An all-inclusive housing and meal package is also available for the participants and any companions. Composers wishing to attend the festival, concerts, and participate in the masterclasses and workshops, but not needing or wanting a performance or recording, may participate as an auditor for a reduced fee. Please visit our website for details.

Applicants who are currently enrolled in a US-based college or university music program, are eligible for financial aid in the form of undergraduate scholarships (in honor of David Stock) and graduate fellowships (in honor of Leslie Bassett) and an award is available for composers identifying as women in honor of American composer Ruth Crawford Seeger.
