2019 Emerging Composer Competition call for submissions

DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES: Dec 1, 2019. Visit https://bcco.org/ecc-entry
The Berkeley Community Chorus & Orchestra (BCCO) is pleased to announce an Emerging Composer Competition for a commission of a 5-10 minute new work for BCCO's June 2021 concert season. The competition’s purpose is to encourage outstanding emerging composers in the U.S. and provide a forum for their recognition.

Award and Performance
The Emerging Composer Competition winner shall be awarded:
♪ Commission of a 5-10 minute choral work with a premiere in spring 2021
♪ Cash award of $8,000
♪ Recordings of three concert performances on CD and a mastered, final CD of the entire concert program
♪ Travel, per diem, and lodging at a board member’s house for a workshop session with the chorus in spring 2021 and a second trip (travel, per diem, and lodging) for the premiere of the work

As detailed under Entry Guidelines below, applicants shall submit previously composed work to the competition. The winning composer will receive the commission for a new, 5-10 minute choral work (described under Commission Guidelines). The winner shall be selected at the sole discretion of the BCCO Board of Directors and Music Director with input and recommendations from a selection jury and the chorus.

Eligibility
All emerging composers who reside in the US are eligible. Please note that the selection jury shall judge whether a composer is “emerging” or not, depending on the applicant’s number of large commissions, published works, and professional accomplishments. Note that weight will be given to applicants from underrepresented populations among classical music composers.

Commission Guidelines
The commission shall be written for SATB chorus and accompaniment. Accompaniment can have many forms, ranging from a symphonic orchestra + SATB soloists to a small instrumental ensemble or chamber group, to a classical pipe organ, to name only a few. If an orchestra is contemplated, overlap with the instrumentation of the other work on the program (see below) is desirable: two flutes, two oboes, English horn, two clarinets, two bassoons, contrabassoon, four horns, three trumpets, three trombones, timpani, cymbals and strings.

The major work in BCCO's June 2021 concerts will be Michael Tippett's A Child of Our Time. We ask that the newly commissioned work be informed by the fact that it will share the program with the Tippett work.
Composers should note that BCCO is a 160-voice, non-auditioned chorus and should take into account the difficulty of the work accordingly. Instrumentalists are generally at a professional level.

Entry Guidelines
Interested composers shall submit:
♪ A previously composed score of a combined choral and orchestral composition
- OR, if the above is not available -
♪ a previously composed score of a vocal composition (choral preferred) AND a
