Illinois Young Composer Contest

The School of Music at the University of Illinois is pleased to announce the inaugural Illinois Young Composer Contest.

This competition is open to high school composers of original instrumental concert music, with or without electronics. Students are encouraged to submit musical scores for any combination(s) of the following instruments:

flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, percussion, piano, violins, viola, cello, double bass.

Scores will be reviewed by University of Illinois composition faculty members. The deadline for submission is November 20, 2019. Finalists will be invited to participate in a masterclass led by a composition faculty member, as well as a reading session in early December 2019. Pieces with alternative instrumentation will be considered, but may not be guaranteed inclusion on the reading session. The composition faculty will select 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize winners from the finalists to receive a small monetary award ($150, $100, and $50), as well as one or more honorable mentions.

Submission Information:

1. Complete the application form.

2. Upload a PDF of your musical score of an original composition to the School of Music Dropbox. Files should be named as follows: lastName_firstName_TitleofWork.pdf

3. Optional: Upload an mp3 recording of your composition (MIDI mock-up recordings are acceptable). Please follow the same naming procedure as outlined above.
