Chorus Austin's 2020 Young Composers Competition
Premiere your choral composition as part of Chorus Austin’s 7th annual Young Composers Competition at their Southwest Voices Festival! Saturday April 18, 2020 at 7:30 pm, and Sunday April 19, 2020 at 4:oo pm

Composer Requirements:

Participation is open to composers of any nationality.
Composer must be no more than 30 years old at submission deadline (February 15, 2020).
Previous winners, as well as composers directly related to board and staff of Chorus Austin, are not eligible to participate.

Composition Requirements:

Between be 2-5 minutes in length
Piece may be part of a major work
Any combination of SA voicing
May be a cappella or with piano accompaniment (may include hand percussion)
A cappella compositions must include a piano reduction.
Piece may be Secular or Sacred
Text must be public domain or the composer must include the letter of permission from the copyright owner in the submission.
One (1) entry per composer
Piece may have been previously performed, but not published.

Judging:
A panel of judges will select the winner. Judging criteria will include, but is not limited to:

Voice leading
Harmonic language
Setting of text
Piano accompaniment (as appropriate)
General understanding of the choral idiom

Submission Requirements:

Submit score in PDF format, anonymously
Remove all names and identifying marks from anywhere in the score
Score must be legible and created with an engraving software.
Submit score as an attachment in application submission form: (Google document)
Requested information includes: Composer’s name, address, phone number, email address, date of birth, and current occupation.

Deadline and Notification

All submissions must be received by February 15, 2020 at 11:59 pm CDT.
Composers will be notified via email with the results of the competition by March 31, 2020

Prizes:

Two winners will be selected from the pool of applicants: a first-place winner and a runner-up

First place winner will receive:
$1250 cash prize
Two (2) complimentary tickets to each Southwest Voices performance
Professional recording of the performance of the composition
$750 Travel Reimbursement if the composer is able to be present for the premiere performance (winner is not required to attend)
Opportunity to work with Maestro Ryan Heller and Chorus Austin Chamber Ensemble at a scheduled rehearsal before the concerts, either in person or virtually

Runner-up will receive:
$500 cash prize
Two (2) complimentary tickets to each Southwest Voices performance
Professional recording of the performance of the composition
$100 Travel Reimbursement if the composer is able to be present for the premiere performance (runner-up is not required to attend)​
