About Sound World

We are a new music and education charity registered with the UK Charity Commission. We are passionately committed to the promotion contemporary classical music and to providing high level educational opportunities to young people who would otherwise miss out.

We run an annual programme of concerts and commission a great deal of new work. Recent commissions have included Michael Ellison, Hannah Kendall, Anna Meredith, John Pickard, Sadie Harrison, Jim Aitchison and many others.

there are 2 separate calls in 2020. Deadlines as follows:
1st June
6th July


1. This call is open to any composers who are 25 or under
2. Pieces should be unpublished and should have received no previous performances.
3. Submissions should be chamber pieces written in response to music by Beethoven in celebration of the 250th anniversary of his birth.
4. Duration should be 3 to 7 minutes
5. Instrumentation: small chamber ensemble (2 to 6 performers) details to be confirmed - see below*
6. Source material: the Beethoven pieces that should be taken as the starting point will be chosen shortly, details to be confirmed - see below*
7. Submissions should be accompanied by a short CV. These will not be opened until after the selection process has taken place.

The selected pieces will be performed at concerts in our 2020/21 season. This includes a high profile, gala concert at St. George’s, Bristol one of the region’s finest concert halls.

All submissions from composers under the age of 20 swill be automatically be entered into the Sound World Young Composers’ Prize 2020.
