INTERNATIONAL COMPOSITION COMPETITION
INTRODUCTION
The International Summer Academy Alden Biesen, in cooperation with Musica Sacra Basiliek Tongeren vzw,
is organising a composition competition for new choir music. The aim is to encourage contemporary
composers to write innovative religious choir music that is suitable for concert as well as for contemporarydynamic liturgy.
The composition competition is held biennially and took place for the first time in 2018. The winner of this
first edition was Herman Lemmens (*1961).
DESCRIPTION
The composition competition comprises the writing of:
- Option 1: a MAGNIFICAT
- Option 2: a Marian antiphon, to be chosen between Sub tuum praesidium and Salve Regina
An expert jury chaired by Daan Manneke (NL) is to evaluate the submitted works. The jury reserves the
right not to select a winner in case none of the submitted works meet their quality standards.
The winning works will be published by EUPRINT publishing.
These compositions shall be rehearsed in the course of the INTERNATIONAL SUMMER ACADEMY 2020. The
Marian antiphon will be performed during the radio Mass (Radio 1) on the occation of the Feast of
Assuption on 15 August at 10 a.m., broadcast live from the Basilica of Our Lady in Tongeren. The Magnificat
will be created during the final concert of the summer academy. Both works will be conducted by Jan
Peeters (music director).
The winners will be invited to the International Summer Academy 2020 at the expense of the organising
committee. They will stay for the entire duration (from 11 to 15 August) at the castle of Alden Biesen (at
full board) and may attend all lectures and concerts.
The laureates will be asked to give an presentation of their vision on contemporary choral music, with
reference to their own repertoire and, in particular, an explanation of the winning work.
RULES OF THE COMPETITION
1. General conditions of participation:
1.1 The competition is open to all composers.
1.2 Each participant chooses one option.
1.3 The participant must register and sign up by 31 March 2020 at the latest via
www.organum-aldenbiesen.be
Registration for participation will promptly be confirmed via email.
1.4 The entry must be received by 25 April 2020 at the latest.
1.5 The composition will be published by EUPRINT publishing under their General Terms and
Conditions. For details please consult EUPRINT (info@euprint.be) or music director Jan
Peeters (jan.peeters2@outlook.com).
1.6 All rights to the composition remain with the composer, except for the performance in
Tongeren.
1.7 The winners will be notified personally on 1 June 2020.
2. Requirements MAGNIGFICAT – MARIAN ANTIPHON:
2.1 MAGNIFICAT
2.1.1 A concertante MAGNIFICAT is to be composed.
2.1.2 The MAGNIFICAT is for mixed choir (SATB – without split voices) with accompaniment by
A: either organ (*) with optional addition of one solo instrument
B: or an instrumentation of up to three instruments from a choice or combination
of brass, woodwinds, strings, percussion.
(*) An organ accompaniment shall take into account the different options of the transept
organ (Thomas) of the Basilica of Our Lady in Tongeren.

A capella fragments are allowed for options A and B.
Optionally a soprano solo (professional level) may also be added.
2.1.3 The duration of the Magnificat is between 12 and 15 minutes.
2.1.4 The Magnificat is to follow the traditional Latin text (Luke 1: 46-55).
2.1.5 The composition must be an original work.
2.1.6 It is allowed to submit an already existing work, if it has not yet been performed and
published.
2.2 MARIAN-ANTIPHON
2.2.1 The composer chooses between the 'Sub tuum praesidium' or the 'Salve Regina'.
2.2.2. The text is in Latin.
2.2.2 The Marian antiphon is for mixed choir (SATB – without split voices) with organ
accompaniment (*), a capella fragments are allowed.
(*) An organ accompaniment shall take into account the different options of the transept
organ (Thomas) of the Basilica in Tongeren.

2.2.3 The composition is suitable for a contemporary dynamic liturgy and lasts between 3 and 5
minutes.
2.2.4 The composition must be an original work.
2.2.5 It is allowed to submit an already existing work, if it has not yet been performed and
published.
3. How to submit an entry
3.1 The participant is to send their entry in two sealed envelopes (see below). The name of the
composer is not to be indicated, instead a code word of the composer’s choice shall be
used.
This allows to identify the entry without knowledge of the composer’s identity. Thus the
entry can be evaluated objectively.
a. The first envelope includes:
- Three copies of the composition, printed in A4 format. A cover page is to state
the title of the composition and the code word of the composer’s choice.
Optionally a short explanatory note can be included here.
- A CD-ROM with the full score as a printable PDF-file. The title of the
composition and the code word are indicated on the CD-ROM.
b. The second envelope includes:
- A comprehensive CV of the participant.
- Their personal data:
o Name, address, date of birth
o E-mail address, mobile phone and/or phone number
ON THIS ENVELOPE THE CODE WORD IS INDICATED (not the name of the
sender)
3.2 Both envelopes must be received by 25 April 2020 at the latest, to the attention of:

4. Other provisions
4.1 The organising committee, following the rules and policies, undertakes to ensure the
correct procedure of the competition. The jury’s decision will not be communicated via
e-mail, letter or telephone. The jury’s decision is irrevocable.
4.2 Submitted works will not be returned, but may, if desired, be collected by appointment
with Jan Peeters (jan.peeters2@outlook.com).
4.3 By their participation the participants accept the rules of the competition without any
reservation.
