Call for tender
International Hanns Eisler Scholarship of the City of Leipzig 2021

The International Hanns Eisler Scholarship of the City of Leipzig will also be awarded in 2021. This will be the third time that the city of Leipzig, a city of music, has set an example of living memory of Hanns Eisler, one of the most important composers of the 20th century, who was born in Leipzig in 1898.

The international scholarship is aimed at composers with appropriate qualifications, such as a university degree or a subject-related course of study.

Applicants are aware of the tradition and connotation of Hanns Eisler's life and work. Accordingly, the focus of their work is an art that relates to reality, traces opposites, builds bridges and carries humanity and freedom within itself.

The scholarship is part of a composer-in-residence programme that includes a composition and study stay in Leipzig. The programme aims to create a platform for the further development and promotion of New Music. The programme is conceived and organised by Eisler-Haus Leipzig e. V. in cooperation with the Cultural Office of the City of Leipzig.

Scholarship holders are given the opportunity to live for five months in the apartment where Hanns Eisler was born at Hofmeisterstraße 14 in Leipzig and to devote themselves to a previously conceived work project. The resulting composition will be premiered by Ensemble Avantgarde as part of the concert series "musica nova" in the Mendelssohn-Saal of the Gewandhaus in Leipzig. It is required that the scholarship holder or the scholarship holder is mainly in Leipzig during the five months of the residency (April to August 2021). During his or her stay, he or she may not be enrolled at a university of music or receive another scholarship.

The International Hanns Eisler Scholarship also includes financial support of 1,000 € per month for the period of the residency.

There is no age limit.
