Walnut Hill Virtual Summer Composition Intensive

The Walnut Hill Virtual Summer Composition Intensive is a newly-created online summer program open to young composers around the world (rising 6th grade through graduating 12th grade). Led by instructor Dr. William Cooper (Composition, Theory and Music History Faculty, Walnut Hill School for the Arts), and guest artist Dr. Jihye Chang (faculty member of the Brevard Music Center, and at Florida State University), students will compose a piece for solo piano that will be read and recorded by Dr. Chang.

Dates: July 6-10 (Times of classes will be flexible, based on time zones of participants)

Each student will participate in:

- Daily group lessons with Dr. Cooper focusing on each student’s developing piece for solo piano

- Daily seminar on the following special topics:

- Writing for the piano
- Classical piano repertoire
- 20th and 21st century piano repertoire
- Counterpoint and Harmony
- Form and Narrative

- One hour-long talk and Q and A session with Dr. Jihye Chang during the first day on topics related to composing for the piano

- Reading and recording session of new pieces for the piano on the last day of the workshop. Dr. Chang will work with each student on their piece, with an opportunity for feedback and workshopping. Each student will be able to use the recording for archival purposes
