New Opera West Call for Scores for 3-5 minute opera shorts to be animated

New Opera West is currently accepting composer submissions for a new animated opera series, showcasing mini operas or opera scenes, 3-5 minutes in length, that have a clear narrative from start to finish.

• Open to all composers regardless of age or nationality.
• Opera scenes around 3-5 minutes in length.
• The scene may be on any topic.
• Text can be in any language; English translation must be provided.
• If the text is not original or in the public domain, composers must submit written confirmation that permission has been given from the author, poet, or rights holder to set the text to music.
• Scenes may be excerpted from a longer piece, but they must stand on their own with a complete, coherent dramatic arc.
• Excerpts that already have a master recording available for use in this project are preferred but not required.
• Piano accompaniment (if no previous master recording has been made). A playable piano reduction of an ensemble or orchestra part is acceptable.
• Please submit scenes that would be well suited for animation. Ex. Elaborate characters that could be non-human, visual effects that are hard to portray on the stage, elaborate settings that would be artistically and visually appealing with animation.

• There is no application fee.
• Applications submitted on a rolling basis.
• Score should be in PDF format. Ideally, scores should be notated in Finale, Sibelius, or similar computer notation program.
• If you already have a master recording of the work, please submit that as well.
• If you don’t have a master recording, please include an mp3 audio recording (MIDI realization acceptable).
• PDF scores and audio files should be sent to: with “[LAST NAME, FIRST NAME]: NOW Animated Opera Short” in the subject line. (Example: SMITH, EMMA: NOW Animated Opera Short)

If Selected:
• Selected composers will have their scenes animated by a professional animator in the coming months.
