Toronto String Composition Workshop 2020: Call for Scores

The Toronto Strings Composition Workshop, featuring the Grenadier String Quartet, is taking place on August 21/22 2020. The workshop will be streamed in real time, allowing auditors and participants to interact with one another, and engage in dialogue with the artistic team.

Eligibility: Only open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, and refugee/asylum seekers within Canada. There are no age restrictions, and previous participants from the 2019 string composition workshop may apply again.

Submission Criteria:

  • Instrumentation: Composers are invited to submit new or existing works for string quartet (2 violin, viola, cello), or string trios, duos, or solo drawn from the instruments available in the quartet.
  • The composer should be able to provide parts and a score for workshop purposes.
  • Duration: shorter works are preferred (8 minutes or less).
  • Complexity: we are open to receiving beginner, intermediate, and advanced works, and will aim to feature a blend of pieces based on the available time during the workshop.
  • Electronics: we are open to receiving pieces with fixed tape parts, but we are not able to facilitate live processed electronics for this iteration of the workshop.
  • TSCW will accept a minimum of 10 pieces with the possibility of additional pieces.
  • Composers are welcome to submit two compositions per application. Selected composers will each have only one piece featured in the workshop.
  • Auditors are welcomed to join in virtually, and may submit questions during Q&A sections with guest speakers.
  • There is no application fee.

Workshop Experience: The workshop will include two days of artist talks and live workshopping of selected pieces with the Grenadier String Quartet. The workshop process will include a play through of the piece, dialogue with the composer, and production of an archived recording for the composer’s use. Each piece will be workshopped for 30-35 minutes. See our schedule here.

Deadline: July 13, 2020 11:59pm EST

There is an optional participation fee that supports the operations of the project.
