White Snake Projects Call for Writers and Composers SING OUT STRONG: Essential Voices

White Snake Projects is excited to announce the third commissioning Call for SING OUT STRONG, a community-based project that sets stories to music on activist themes to amplify underrepresented voices. In 2019, we launched this song series with SING OUT STRONG: Immigrant Voices. In May 2020, due to the Covid-19 virus, we took these concerts online for SING OUT STRONG: DeColonized Voices, to great acclaim. See https://www.classical-scene.com/2020/05/17/decolonized-vocies/

The pandemic has changed our entire way of life. It has changed the way we work, recreate, eat, learn, teach, interact with friends and family, etc. And it has forced us to confront the fact that life is precarious, fragile and precious. It has exposed the great divide in American society, with black and brown people disproportionately succumbing to the virus, as compared to white people.

We are collecting stories from essential workers about their experiences working on the front lines. We’d like to hear from medical personnel, hospital housekeepers, grocery store workers, delivery people and other essential workers. We want to hear about
what you do, how you’ve been coping, your hopes, your fears, your families, your despair – anything you’re moved to write about. We will adapt your text, keeping your story intact and using as many of your words as we can, into singable lyrics.

We’re seeking composers who are moved by the times we live in and who want to collaborate to lift up the voices of the heroes who have enabled the rest of us to shelter in place, at great expense to themselves and to their families.

To apply, please fill out the online form here: https://forms.gle/L2Vf7BS4WgDr18xx8

● Writers, please submit your writing (songs, poems, text or stories told predominantly in English) that you wish us to consider as the lyrics to a song on your lived experience as an essential worker. Don’t worry about whether your writing is “singable.” White Snake Projects will assist the selected writers to rework the lyrics, if necessary. Short stories should be no more than one page. Composers can be their own lyricists and should submit their lyrics accordingly.

● Composers, please submit two (2) links to recorded samples of your work on hosted audio or video on sites like YouTube, Vimeo and SoundCloud. Studio-quality recordings are not required. Due to the ongoing pandemic, SOS: Essential Voices will be a virtual concert. Please bear that in mind when composing your piece. Musical Forces: Piano, cello and Soprano or Mezzo. Length: 2-5 minutes of music.

● Any questions, email us at info@whitesnakeprojects.org with SING OUT STRONG: Essential Voices, as the subject.

● The applicants selected to be part of the songwriting teams will be paid an honorarium.

● Deadline: September 1, 2020. Selected writers and composers will be notified by mid September, 2020.

● Final songs are due November 2, 2020.

PLEASE NOTE: SELECTION AS AN SOS COMPOSER OR WRITER DOES NOT GUARANTEE THAT YOUR WORK WILL BE PERFORMED OR PRESENTED BY WHITE SNAKE PROJECTS.

White Snake Projects is an activist opera company founded and led by an immigrant woman of color. We’re committed to integrating social activism with original opera, partnering with other activists to cross-promote important social issues and opera, and redefining how opera is made by involving young people from our community. There is no better way to bridge the chasms of race, national origin and gender than through a reimagined art form combining cutting edge technology, music, theater, and dance. We kicked off our ambitious strategy with Ouroboros Trilogy, a trio of grand operas, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning Madame White Snake, in September 2016 and continued with REV. 23 (2017) and PermaDeath (2018), and I Am A Dreamer Who No Longer Dreams (2019).
