Commissioning Opportunity for Composers of Color

With COVID-19 sidelining live vocal performance for the foreseeable future, Thompson Street Opera Company is exploring new frameworks for operatic performance. Therefore, in place of our originally-planned Fall mainstage production, we are soliciting proposals for commissioned dramatic works for virtual performance. Composers will have 12 weeks to create a 15+ minute dramatic work for performance in December.

We will be commissioning up to three composers of color to write dramatic chamber works (see the next page for instrumentation specifics), created with performer and audience safety in mind. Each commissioned composer will receive $500, a professionally rehearsed and recorded performance which will be broadcast online by the company in December of 2020, and the opportunity to participate in a video Q&A session which will also be broadcast by the company. Commissioned composers and their works will be promoted on social media platforms, on our website, and in email newsletters.

As a company, we acknowledge that we have done a poor job of including works by composers of color in previous seasons. This project is intended to kick-start our renewed commitment to amplifying underrepresented voices in opera. We will not be accepting proposals from white composers for this call. Additionally, we will not be accepting completed works. We encourage completed works to be submitted to our annual Call for Scores, accessible through our website at www.thompsonstreetopera.org .
