What it means to be an artist-in-residence with ODYSSEYS Costa Rica:
Selection Committee review of each applicant's portfolio or manuscript.
Cultural immersion into a truly community -based Artists' Colony.
Opportunities to practice Spanish or learn some (a working knowledge is helpful but not required)
Minimum residency duration is two weeks. Preference may be given to residencies of one month or longer. Shorter than two weeks can be requested, but may only be granted to returning artists--those who have previously been in residence with Odysseys.
Residency begins with an airport pick-up when possible, and accompanied forty-five minute ride to accommodations.
Same-day or next-morning orientation to the program and Costa Rica, with a tour of San Ramón.
One meal and one local outing hosted by ODYSSEYS each week for all artists in residence to share time with each other, local artists when possible, and with the Program Director.
As part of hosted meals and events all artists are encouraged (never required) to share work: open studios, presentations and readings, etc...
When possible these opportunities will also be provided publicly at least once during an artist's residency, often at the end, at appropriate local venues such as the Figueres Museum and Cultural Center.
Optional outings to explore galleries, museums, theatres and other aspects of local culture, as well as adventure trips to beaches, volcanoes, and other natural wonders of Costa Rica will be scheduled with the input of all artists in residence.

Accommodations are for both living and working.
Writers are provided a private space with standard desk or table and chair (adjustible when possible).
Composers are provided private work space for their own equipment, or if desired, access to a piano or professional electronic keyboard (must be arranged for during the application process.)
Visual artists are provided work space as described below, and are invited to exhibit at the prestigious National Gallery located in the Costa Rican Center for Science & Culture.
Many of our visual artists are photographers, videographers, multi-media artists and plein-air painters who work out and about. Our host families typically have indoor and covered outdoor garden areas with natural light and space for work tables, easels, etc... Visual artists who require more elaborate indoor studio space must request this during the application process. In general, additional special equipment or supplies are the responsibility of each artist.

The ODYSSEYS Costa Rica standard accommodations: HOME STAY: A private room and meals with a carefully selected host family as described above, a shared bath (occasionally a private bath can be arranged), individual work space and common living space (living room/dining room/outdoor areas) which may be shared with the family or may be separate for artists. Weekly laundry services, housecleaning and change of bed & bath linens. Internet is often available in the home. This may be available from a shared work station or by WiFi. Internet cafes are abundant and inexpensive.
Other details:

Long distance phoning can be accomplished over the Internet as available with the accommodations, or in any of numerous local Internet Cafes. Phone cards are also ready available, sold in most markets.

Artists are encouraged to bring electronic devices with Wireless Internet capability, as Wi-Fi is now widely available in Costa Rica.

For printing, artists need to bring a portable printer with their laptop, or plan to print at any one of numerous Internet cafes within a short walk of most of our accommodations.

San Ramón has a multi-lane swimming pool in the center of town, which costs a little under $2 for the day, including on weekends. Monthly passes can be purchased for about $16/three days per week or about $20/five days a week. Las Musas (The Muses) nature reserve is close by and boasts a huge swimming pool with a water slide, beautiful gigantic waterfalls, hiking trails, plus guided horseback and canopy excursions. ($6 taxi fare each way can be shared by 4 or more passengers; $6 day pass per person.)

Artists-in-residence frequently want to take a day or weekend trip to one of Costa Rica's many places of interest: volcanoes, volcanic hot springs, beaches, mountains, warm-water whitewater rafting, and galleries/museums. A full day of meals, transportation and sightseeing activities with a bilingual guide generally run around $115 per person. San Ramón museums tend to have weekly events which are very inexpensive and often free.

Should artists wish to do more traveling during their stay, on weekends or before or after their residency, ODYSSEYS staff is happy to help with ideas about what to do individually or as a group, as well as what group trips come highly recommended because of the bilingual guides, easy & safe transportation, meals included, etc...
