Arizona Musicfest Young Composers Competition
-Applicants must be in 7th thru 12th grades.
-Applicants must be Arizona residents.
-There is a $25 non-refundable entrance fee.
-Composition(s) DUE FRIDAY, APRIL 7TH AT 12PM NOON (see submission requirements at azmusicfest.org).
-An applicant may submit up to two (2) compositions.
-The composition length must be between 3 and 7 minutes.
-A composition may be in any style.
-Compositions are accepted for string quartet or any division of the ensemble thereof (a violin solo, a violin/cello duet, a trio, etc).
-Pieces will be evaluated by composition professionals on general musicality, harmonic, melodic and rhythmic interest, and pragmatic writing for the chosen instrument(s).
-Only one winner (the “Winner”) will be chosen. The Winner will receive $250, a reading of the work by professional musicians for the instrument(s) for which the submitted composition was written, and a recording of the work. The composer will be able to work with the professional musicians at the reading, perfecting the performance of their piece. Dependent on performance suitability, as well as relevant logistical considerations, the work may be presented at the Arizona Young Musicians Concert held at the MIM on May 7th, 2017, performed by professional or student musicians.
-An Honorable Mention piece/composer may be named.
-Decision of competition judges are final. If no piece merits the title, the judges may decide to not choose a “Winner,” or may solely choose an Honorable Mention.
