In conjunction with the launch of its inaugural Composer-in-Residence Program, the Western Connecticut Youth Orchestra announces a call for scores. Founded in 2002 and based in Ridgefield, Connecticut, the mission of the Western Connecticut Youth Orchestra is to educate and inspire young musicians through the study and performance of classical and contemporary musical works, participation in enrichment activities, and engagement with the community.

The WCYO will select up to four student composers to have compositions read by the WCYO Symphony Orchestra. The readings will take place on January 20, 2018 (snow date: January 27), guided by WCYO Composer-in-Residence, Paul Frucht, and WCYO Music Director, Eric Mahl. Participating student composers will receive feedback on their submissions from Mr. Frucht and Mr. Mahl in advance of, and during, the readings. The student composers will also receive a professional recording of the reading session. At the conclusion of the readings, a piece or pieces may be selected for performance at a future WCYO concert, solely at the discretion of the WCYO music director.

ELIGIBILITY:

*Composers may submit as many pieces as they wish for consideration.

*Composers must be a no older than a senior in high school senior during the 2017- 2018 academic year. There is no age minimum.

*Composers must have an address in one of the following states: Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire or Vermont.

*Submitted compositions should be no longer than 8 minutes in duration and scored for the following maximum instrumentation: 2 Flutes (piccolo), 2 Oboes, 2 B-flat Clarinets (bass clarinet), 2 Bassoons, 4 Horns, 2 C Trumpets, 2 Trombones (bass
trombone), 1 Tuba, Timpani + 3 Percussion, Harp and Strings.

*Compositions with a performance history are welcome, but please list all previous performances and/or readings, and the performing ensemble(s) on the Entry Form.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: What to do!

1. All submissions must be EMAILED to WCYOcallforscores@gmail.com
Subject line should read “(Composer Name)-WCYO Call for Scores”.
Body of the e-mail should include the following contact information:
- Full Name
- Telephone Number
- Email Address

*No hard copy or mailed submissions will be accepted.

2.Attached to the email:
- Entry Form (See Below)
- PDF of Score
- Program Notes (1 page maximum)
- Bio or Resume (2 pages maximum)
- If possible, a recording or MIDI mockup in MP3 format.

3. To complete your submission, please submit a $20 application fee through the WCYO website for each composition.
