Greater Bridgeport Symphony 2018 Emerging Composer Competition - Pioneering New Works

The Greater Bridgeport Symphony announces a national competition for innovative composers of orchestral music. Because the GBS believes in the future of orchestral music, the winner will premiere his / her composition during a concert conducted by the Symphony’s dynamic maestro, Eric Jacobsen, during the 2018-2019 GBS season at the Klein Auditorium in Bridgeport, Connecticut. This competition embraces Maestro Jacobsen’s goal of premiering new works and his vision of bringing orchestral music to a new generation of classical music fans.

Finalists: Notified by June 29, 2018
Three finalists will be chosen to have their works rehearsed by the orchestra. Each finalist is eligible for up to $250 in travel reimbursement if they are available to attend a reading rehearsal.

1st Prize: $1000 and the Opportunity to Premiere Composition at a GBS 2018-2019 Concert
2nd Prize: $500
3rd Prize: $250

Open to all orchestral composers ages 18 - 32 that are residents of the U.S.A.

RULES
1. ELIGIBILITY:  The Competition is open to all composers who are residents of the United States and are eighteen (18) through thirty-two (32) years of age as of April 27, 2018.

COMPOSITION:  Total performance time for the composition is limited to no more than twelve (12) minutes. Works previously published, performed in concert, or commercially recorded will not be considered.

INSTRUMENTATION: Composer should produce scores and parts that include standard instrumentation. Instrumentation can up to but not more than Woodwind: 3222; Brass: 4331; Percussion: T+2; Percussion, Harp, Piano, and Strings, as usual. Standard doubling instruments, such as flute/piccolo, oboe/EH, clarinet/bass clarinet, are fine.

PRELIMINARY COMPETITION: Preliminary judging is conducted digitally via electronic submission. Submission deadline is Friday, April 27, 2018.
Both a computer-engraved score and parts in PDF format and an audio recording of the composition (MP3 files preferred) must be submitted to gbscomposer@gmail.com.
The score and parts be prepared to a high standard including rehearsal marks and measure numbers.
Note: Files over 20MB should be submitted using a file-sharing service such as Google Drive or Dropbox.
Personal details must not appear on the score as the works will be judged anonymously

FINALIST COMPETITION: Finalists will be notified by Friday, June 29, 2018. Three finalists will be chosen to have their works rehearsed by the orchestra. Each finalist should submit 2 copies of the bound score. Each finalist is eligible for up to $250 in travel reimbursement if they are available to attend the reading rehearsal.
