Young Women Composers Camp

The Young Women Composers Camp (YWCC) is a two-week day camp at Temple University designed for girls ages 14–19 who are interested in pursuing a career in music. The 2018 camp dates are July 9–20, from 9am to 3:30pm. Our mission is to amplify the voices of young women, to allow them access to a high level of musical training, and to close the gender gap in the music composition field and create a more equitable music sector. The class of 2018 will include approximately 30 girls from all districts in the region, both in Philadelphia and in the neighboring suburbs, which will allow our students the opportunity to gain a wider insight and forge friendships outside of their immediate communities.

Courses will include writing for different instruments, orchestration, song writing, jazz composition/improvisation, and electronic music, in addition to daily sessions in theory and ear-training, composition seminar, and chorale. The 2018 camp will also feature a collaboration with the Sō Percussion Summer Institute and visits from guest composers Missy Mazzoli and Sarah Kirkland Snider. The camp will culminate in a world premieres performance of student works, which will be performed and recorded by professional musicians.

We invite applications from students who identify as female or non-binary, and who will be between the ages of 14–19 by July 9th, 2018. No composition experience is necessary, but general musical experience and the ability to read music is required. The camp is open to students from outside of the Philadelphia area, but neither housing nor travel expenses will be provided to accepted students from outside of the region.

All accepted students will receive a full or partial scholarship. Partial scholarship recipients will be required to pay $350, and the first payment of at least $50 will be due by May 1st, 2018.

Applicants will be required to submit the following:

1) Supplemental musical materials. You can choose to submit any of the following options below (mix and match if you prefer), and must submit at least two files.
*1–2 sample compositions of any length or instrumentation. A midi file or live recording may be included in the application, but is not necessary. Music should preferably be notated on computer software, but a scanned image of a handwritten score may also be submitted (please make sure it is legible).
*1–2 recordings/videos of an improvisation
*1–2 recordings/videos of a composition or song that is not notated.
*Anything else that you think we should see/hear that shows your musical ability.

2) Recommendation letter from a teacher (a music teacher is preferred, but not necessary).
