Young Women Composers Camp

The Young Women Composers Camp (YWCC) is a two-week day camp at Temple University designed for girls ages 14–19 who are interested in pursuing a career in music. The 2018 camp dates are July 9–20, from 9am to 3:30pm. Our mission is to amplify the voices of young women, to allow them access to a high level of musical training, and to close the gender gap in the music composition field and create a more equitable music sector. The class of 2018 will include approximately 30 girls from various parts of the region, which will allow our students the opportunity to gain a wider insight and forge friendships outside of their immediate communities.

Courses will include writing for different instruments, orchestration, song writing, jazz composition/improvisation, and electronic music, in addition to daily sessions in theory and ear-training, composition seminar, and chorale. The 2018 camp will also feature a collaboration with the Sō Percussion Summer Institute and visits from guest composers Missy Mazzoli and Sarah Kirkland Snider. The camp will culminate in a world premieres performance of student works, which will be performed and recorded by professional musicians.

We invite applications from students who identify as female or non-binary, and who will be between the ages of 14–19 by July 9th, 2018. No composition experience is necessary, but general musical experience and the ability to read music is required. Students who do not reside in the Philadelphia area are welcome to apply, but will need to provide their own transportation and housing.

All accepted students will receive a full or partial scholarship! Partial scholarship recipients will be required to pay $350, and the first payment of at least $50 will be due by May 1st, 2018.
